The University of Wisconsin–Madison’s online Capstone Certificate in Applied Engineering Management prepares professional engineers to successfully lead technical and project teams.

Incorporating fundamental applied management skills such as leadership, data-driven decision-making and economic analysis for managers, this certificate can be a standalone credential or a stepping stone to the Master’s of Engineering in Engineering Management, which is also offered in an online format.

As a student in the Capstone Certificate in Applied Engineering Management program, you’ll explore foundational management and leadership skills, learn to evaluate the nuances of financial decision-making and apply data analysis and technical tools to engineering applications — all designed to give you the practical skills and in-demand expertise to advance professionally or work toward a graduate degree.

In addition to core online coursework in engineering leadership, economics and decision-making, you’ll select an elective course to grow your skillset in one of three areas: project management, communications or ethics, allowing you to tailor your certificate to your professional goals.

Top-Notch Education, Completely Online The format of the Capstone Certificate in Applied Engineering Management is completely online, making it easy for you to learn without affecting your full-time job.

The nine-credit Capstone was designed for completion in three consecutive terms of three credits per term.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for the Capstone Certificate in Applied Engineering Management are
  • B.S. degree in engineering from an ABET-approved program.*
  • Minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work). Applicants from an international institution must have a strong academic performance comparable to a 2.75 for an undergraduate degree. All GPAs are based on a 4.0 scale.
  • GRE: Not required but may be considered if available.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English or whose undergraduate instruction was not in English must provide an English proficiency test score and meet the Graduate School minimum requirements (https://grad.wisc.edu/apply/requirements/#english-proficiency).
*Interested applicants with B.S. degrees in related fields should contact the Graduate Academic Advisor for more specific admission information at gradadmissions@interpro.wisc.edu. For further details about the program, please see the program website. Apply Early! Applications are accepted for admission to all three terms (fall, spring, summer). Applications are reviewed in the order received until the May 1 deadline for summer admissions, July 1 deadline for fall admissions, and November 1 for spring admissions. Admission is competitive and selective. Therefore, applicants are encouraged to submit application materials prior to the deadline.

Tuition Costs

$1,300 per credit, payable at the beginning of each semester. Students are billed for courses in which they are enrolled each term.

Tuition includes:

  • Technology costs for internet course delivery
  • Live web-conferencing
  • Toll-free telephone line for the audio portion of conference calls
  • Library use
  • Use of the web-conferencing software for group project work, for program courses

No additional fees exist, such as distance learning fees or segregated fees.

*This total does not include textbooks or course software. Software required for courses is typically available in educational versions at substantial discounts.
